I have had two careers – the first 12 years I owned a durable medical equipment company and the last 12 years I have owned a law practice. I recognized early on that the primary basis for making all business decisions rested upon a sound financial understanding – past, present and future. I knew from the start of my business career that I needed a rare breed of accounting professional – one who understood the financial nuts and bolts backwards and forwards but who also, just as importantly, had a financial common sense that could be applied within a real world environment of people, markets, products, competition, etc. I felt at some times that I was searching for the Holy Grail; at other times I was living in Dr. Seuss’s Go Dog Go book: I interviewed and hired accountants from large and small firms; and I interviewed and hired controllers from large and small companies.
